In order to investigate the propagation characteristics of ultra-high-frequency (UHF) electromagnetic wave caused by partial discharge (PD) in high voltage switchgear, a simulation model was established by using the finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) method. Based on the model, the influences of magnitude of excitation, detection distance, excitation pulse width and metal board on the propagation characteristics of UHF signal are investigated. The simulation results have instructive meanings for the installation of UHF sensor to detect PDs in switchgear.
