The active power filter (APF) is capable of real-time dynamically tracking and compensating harmonic generated by harmonic source. In recent years, nonlinear control theory has developed rapidly, and has become the focus of many scholars. Based on the exact feedback linearization theory for the nonlinear system, this paper newly proposes an improved sliding mode control for a single-phase shunt APF. Firstly, the APF system model is liberalized by the differential geometry theory. Then, in order to impose a desired behavior of the system, a sliding model controller is designed based on the transformed linearized system. Simulation results and experiments indicate that the proposed method have better performance than traditional control method, e.g. dynamic response performance, steady-state characteristics and robustness.
