Operational Characteristics Analysis of a Novel Dual-Rotor Induction Motor based on FEM and Experiment

The concept of dual-rotor induction motor (DRIM) is based on the integration of the flywheel energy storage and electromagnetic slip coupling mechanism. The DRIM has two mechanical ports and one electrical port. The DRIM uses its outer rotor as a flywheel to store the input mechanical energy. By the electromagnetic coupling field raised by an excitation winding in the outer rotor, the previously stored energy is directly transferred to the inner rotor and achieve the instantaneous acceleration of load attached to it. In this paper, the basic structure and operation principle of DRIM are firstly introduced. Then the characteristics of the DRIM under different operation condition are analyzed based on the FEM. Finally the experiments based on a prototype are conducted to verify the analysis results.
