1. In 1990s, when Fleet Assignment Models (FAM) were developed and used to create airlines, it was observed that the operational cost instead of going down went up and quality of service deteriorated. Why? 2. Airlines realized that optimality of the plan is not sufficient while creating airline schedules. We need to create "robust schedules" even though they are less profitable from the planning perspective. 3. This led to the research and development on robust airline scheduling. 3.1 Academic research was mostly theoretical in nature and not much relevant to practice. 3.2 Sabre built 'DPM: Dependability Predictor Model" model (Used by AA).
