HClear™ Technology: A Solution-Based Approach to HCl Abatement

HClear™ technology is a solution-based approach to HCl abatement. HClear is an aqueous solution that is injected ahead of the air preheater, and gaseous chlorides are removed as solid particles by particulate control devices. HClear mechanism and performance results are presented, including data from both pilot-scale testing and a full-scale 150 MW utility boiler demonstration. Test results demonstrate that HClear is selective towards HCl, and does not react with SO_2. The potential for HClear to oxidize elemental mercury, impact on mercury capture when activated carbon products are utilized, and balance-of-plant impacts are discussed. Additionally, potential advantages of HClear to reduce chloride concentrations in units equipped with wet FGD to address water effluent issues related to regulatory compliance are reviewed.
