The feasibility of developing Retimet-vented explosion-proof enclosures for use in underground coal mines has been studied. The results of laboratory tests of Retimet, an open-cell stainless steel foam material, used as a flame arrester on explosion-proof enclosures during internal methane-air explosions are presented. In general, the Retimet proved to be an excellent flame arrester, successfully quenching the flame front in all tests using 9.74% methane-air mixtures. There was no significant thermal damage and no observable shrinkage; however, there was a slight change in color. The Retimet stood up well physically; periodic examination revealed only a light weight loss after repeated explosions. The success of this material in the laboratory has resulted in an agreement with the US Mine Safety and Health Administration's Approval and Certification Center to conduct joint large-scale testing of Retimet on a prescribed test vessel and, if successful, to develop recommendations for its use on vented explosion-proof enclosures that would be less massive than their conventional counterparts.
