Fractal analysis has been applied in many fields since it was proposed by Mandelbrot in 1967. Fractal dimension (FD) is a basic parameter of fractal analysis. In this paper, the area/perimeter relation method was used to estimate the shape fractal dimension of land use patches. Based on land use maps obtained from 1976 to 2009 (1976, 1987, 1991, 1997, 2006, 2009), the dynamic changes for different land use/cover types were analyzed. In the land use maps used in this paper, land use/cover types were divided into 11 classes (rice fields, other agricultural land, forest, unused land, built-up land, transportation routes land, beach, seawater, inland waters, golf course and other land). Comparing the spatial distribution of land use/cover types in 6 nodes, we analyzed the dynamic changes in the spatial distribution and conversion between land use/cover types during the study period. Using the area statistics of different land use/cover types during 1978 to 2009, the dynamic changes in area were obtained. The fractal analysis showed the land use patches had a strong fractal characteristic. The shape fractal dimension results indicated that the development characteristics of the urbanization expansion in the study area.
