•Usefulness of top-down model analysis to complement case studies•Need for better and comparable (panel) data (regional policies, type of wind energy plant/project etc.)•Two (rough) variables to indicate influence of regional policies and initiatives:•Green party percentage as proxy for the strength of local networks favouring or passively supporting decentralized renewable energy sources•Unemployment rate and underlying economic incentives to benefit regionally from renewable energies and the national feed-in tariff•Tension between consistency and heterogeneity of renewable expansion policies.
