Both experiment and numerical simulation were carried out to investigate the interaction between shock wave in water and air-backed convergent structures with various finite thicknesses. Computational model is validated against experimental strain measurements on the solid specimen. Further analysis from the simulations reveals the different origin of the precursor wave in water between the 1.3 mm and the 6 mm thick specimens.
