Laboratory Blast Testing Methodologies

There are a number of confounding factors that make blast testing a challenge, whether in the lab or the field. Shock tube design or blast arena set up, sensor artifacts, and subject orientation present conquerable challenges. When done properly, laboratory testing combined with numerical simulations can provide significant advantages over live-fire testing, including cost savings, ease of use, and increased consistency in repeated tests. But care must be taken when using shock tubes to simulate loads on targets.
