A novel thermal gauge is found to measure the heat transfer rate due to radiative transmission on a space capsule recovery experiment (SRE) model, which is subjected to Mach 8 hypersonic flow condition. For the first case, platinum is used as the sensing element. Though the sensing element could absorb only 30% of incident radiation, experimental results shows that newly devised gauge could pick up signals of radiative heating at the above mentioned flow conditions. In the second case, this measurement technique can be improved by using multi-walled carbon nano tube (MWNT) as the sensing element, which has optical absorption of more than 95%.
