To develop a simplified evaluation method for brittle crack arresttoughness in a heavy-thick plate, the correlation between large-scaletest (such as ESSO test) and small-scale tests (such as NRL dropweighttest and Charpy V-notch impact test) was investigated. It wasfound that nil-ductility transition temperature obtained by the NRLdrop-weight test at the surface layer and fracture appearance transitiontemperature (vTrs) obtained by the Charpy V-notch impact test at thequarter thickness position have a high correlation with brittle crackarrest toughness. A simplified evaluation equation for arrest toughnesswas suggested by combining the results of the small-scale tests. It wasconfirmed that the developed equation can be applied for various steelsindependent of the chemical composition and the manufacturingprocess.
