Wave Forces on Horizontal Cylinder due to Nonlinear Focused Wave Groups

In this study, a numerical wave tank is developed based on commercialsoftware package FLUENT. Velocity inlet method is applied tosimulate nonlinear wave groups and compared with 1st order and 2ndorder wave theories. The horizontal particle velocity of the focusedwave group and regular wave with identical crest height and trough-totroughperiod were calculated. Main efforts are devoted to forces on ahorizontal cylinder. The comparison of the vertical forces on horizontalcylinder for both nonlinear focused wave group and regular wave withthe equivalent trough-to-trough period and wave crest amplitude isconducted. This simulation confirmed that the kinematics of focusedwave group is much severe than that regular wave.
