Fly ash and lime are widely used for ground improvement techniques, mainly for soil treatment of fine grained soils allowing the reuse of soils normally unsuitable to be involved in earthworks. The effectiveness of the improvement mainly depends on the mineralogical and physical properties of natural soil, but the treatment procedures play a relevant role. Fly ash from fluidized bed combustion may be considered as a suitable material for soil stabilisation. In the paper some results of an ongoing research on the physical properties and mechanical behaviour of a soil treated by fluidal fly ash and lime have been reported. Experimental observations have been conducted with reference to the short term and long term effects on physical and mechanical properties of the treated soil. The results allow a first evaluation on the suitability and effectiveness of fluidal fly ash and lime on the soil behaviour.
