Security Standards for Space-Terrestrial Internetworks-A Multidimensional Approach to Securing Shared Circuits

Space-terrestrial internetworks are being investigated by multiple space agencies as a mechanism for sharing communications resources. These efforts are focused on the introduction of packetized, multipath, multihop data exchange so as to more effectively use the diversity of shared links among space and ground assets. DTN protocols are being standardized in international communities to facilitate this new capability, but there is little literature describing an application-level security model suitable for space networks. We conclude that end-to-end security, at the application level, is required in a space-terrestrial internetwork where multiple user communities will communicate traffic over shared links and crossing security enclaves. Existing DTN security standards are not optimal for this purpose, given their tight coupling to routing assumptions, complexity, and requirements relating to configurations and policy not necessary in space networks.
