This paper considers certain aspects of the role of color in isosurface-based volume visualization. A primary concern is examining guidelines for colors in layered translucent surface visualization introduced by House et al. and Ebert et al. These guidelines are considered against an existing classic rule (guideline) about color choices in visual presentations to determine their applicability for isosurface volume renderings. The classic guideline is based on the rules of color harmony introduced by Itten. The examinations are based on evaluation by human observers.
