Ethernet is the most widely used technology on which the current local area networks are built up. The disability of loop detection belongs to the main disadvantages of this technology. The Ethernet technology contains no mechanisms to avoid loops; the frame header also contains no fields to allowing discard looped data frames. Loops occur due to redundant design of the network. The redundancy is necessary because eliminates single points of failure, where one failed device or design element brings down the service. This article is focused on the mechanisms that prevent the creation of bridging loops while keeping the redundant topology. The currently used solutions are very inefficient; they do not reflect the needs of the modern communication techniques. The implementation of the newly developed solutions is extremely expensive. A new economic efficient solution is proposed, based on the requirements imposed on the design of the modern communication networks.
