This paper is concerned with the effectiveness of events detection in residential sector, in order to distinguish a residential load event switching ON/OFF from residential load default occurrence. The considered load defaults are short circuits and voltage drops. The proposed method is based on parity equation for processing a load residual signature starting from the transient and steady state of residential loads current. First, different types of loads have been considered in order to detect their normal operating turning ON/OFF. Second, load default occurrences have been analyzed in order to elaborate residual values which characterize each appliance operating mode. The paper analytically shows that a default or an event occurrence is characterized by a unique residual pattern which allows an effective identification of any event. Both simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
