It is over ten years since Technip last presented on the inter-relationship between trenching, backfilling and subsea pipeline system design and how this could be developed into an overarching design model. This paper presents an update on the success of this model following a further 10 years of trenching experience. In addition, results from geotechnical research on trenching and pipe-soil interaction in recent years are presented and the impact of this research on design optimisation with respect to upheaval buckling and pipeline design is considered. The benefits of an integrated design approach and how this has been implemented in practice are discussed.
