Thermo-phisical properties vs. temperature of selected foundry sands

Thermo-physical properties of foundry moulds are of key importance when formulating the initial / boundary conditions in the built numerical models of castings crystallization and solidification. These properties strongly depend on temperature changes while the data available in software packages are rather mean values. To improve the accuracy of numerical modelling there is a need to establish relationships "a property vs. temperature". The present paper brings results of examining temperature dependencies of thermal conductivity and heat diffusivity coefficients. The examinations were performed for moulding sands commonly used in foundry industry, i.e. green sand and silica quartz - water glass sand. The temperature dependencies presented in the paper were obtained using newest measure techniques, i.e. Laser Flash Analysis and Hot-Disk method. Additionally the so called "Casting Method" was also used. The paper is addressed both to the foundry industry engineers and the scientific workers from the research area of numerical modelling of foundry engineering processes.
