DIFFERENCES IN CELL PHONE ONLY HOUSEHOLDS IN LARGE VERSUS SMALL METROPOLITAN AREAS: EVIDENCE FROM OREGON

Households without landlines are a fast growing segment of the United States. Theirexistence challenges household survey practitioners to gather representative samples ofcommunities in new ways. This paper looks at the demographic and travel behaviordifferences between cell-only households and households with landlines using the 2011Oregon Household Activities Survey, a state-of-the-art one day household travel surveyof over 17,000 households in Oregon. Authors also compare differences between cellonlyhouseholds in large versus small metropolitan areas, focusing on two metropolitanplanning organization (MPO) sub-samples with significant numbers of cell-onlyrespondents: Portland and Rogue Valley. Summary statistics show that cell-onlyhouseholds captured in Portland were younger, of lower incomes, smaller and much morelikely to locate near fixed route transit stops and in denser neighborhoods compared tothe larger Portland sample. But in Rogue Valley, cell-only households were just as largeas the rest of the Rogue Valley respondents but were less likely to be white, less likely tohave a driver, own a vehicle, own their home and were younger. Authors also reportsignificant travel behavior differences between cell-only and other households and howthese differences varied between the two MPO samples.
