Ten Years of Experience with Hot Mix Asphalt Containing Recycled Asphalt Shingles in the City of Edmonton

The use of Recycled Asphalt Shingle (RAS) materials as an additive in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) has been a topic of discussion at numerous meetings, conferences and workshops, and the focus of research in Canada and the United States over the past two decades. In 2003, the City of Edmonton (City) contracted with Wells Construction Ltd. (Wells) for the construction of the 184 Street Grade Separation project. It was requested during the project that the City allow Wells to replace a portion of the specified Asphaltic Concrete Base (ACB) material with ACB containing Manufactured Shingle Modifier (MSM) commonly known as RAS. As a result of the request, the City undertook a laboratory and field study of the proposed material blends in combination with the standard ACB mixes. This resulted in Wells placing three blends of HMA; two with a combination of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and RAS and one with RAP only in the fall of 2003. This paper details the 2003 study completed by the City, through to the development of a Recycled Asphalt Paving specification incorporating RAS, and observed performance of several MSM/RAP mixes placed on City Capital Construction projects over the past ten years.
