Integrated Nuclear Security Model for Nuclear Facilities in South Africa

South African nuclear security has undergone a substantial change, increasing requirements and implementing measures over the last ten years. South Africa is working with international organisations such as Partnership for Nuclear Security (PNS), International Nuclear Security Education Network (INSEN) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to ensure that it meets the highest standards for the protections of nuclear facilities from theft and sabotage. Establishment of a national nuclear security regime which involves efforts from the South African organizations like National Nuclear Regulatory (NNR), South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA), Department of Energy (DoE), Department of Health (DoH) and Educational Institutions, in order to protect the public and environment against the malevolent use of nuclear and radioactive material. This is in accordance with the international recommendations and principles of the convention on physical protection of nuclear materials. Recent activities, basic information about responsibilities of licensees and South African competent authorities, the regulatory framework, and the process of improving nuclear security will be discussed.
