Besides delivering the required functionality while respecting operational constraints, system availability is another critical operational objective for wireless sensor networks (WSN). Various levels of system architecture and their associated design and operational requirements are identified and depicted using the structured systems engineering analysis process. The detailed design stage is complemented with careful attention directed towards the system secondary functions such as availability. To identify the WSN configuration for which an acceptable system availability threshold level is obtained, a simulation model is proposed. Different simulation scenarios are considered to identify the required redundancy to be embedded in the sensor network.
