The continuous growth of power systems in size and complexity and the increasing interconnection ofpreviously isolated regional and national transmission systems lead to operation ever closer to physicaland operational limits. For the Brazilian Interconnected Power System (BIPS), its continental sizecombined with hydrological complementarity among different basins, active power exchangesbetween areas changing direction throughout the year, commissioning of new large hydroelectricpower plants in northern region, increasing participation of renewables in the Brazilian energeticmatrix and upcoming interconnections with neighboring countries make up a major challenge in termsof operation planning and security. Multiple scenarios for active power exchange between areas willarise and new and flexible computational tools will be required to ensure BIPS proper operation fromstatic and dynamic points of view, considering both normal and under contingency operation.This paper describes a project led by CEPEL-Electric Energy Research Center, in collaboration withBrazilian universities, to develop a parallel computational tool designed to perform static and dynamicsecurity assessment of large scale power systems. The main premises of the project are gradualintegration of existing solution engines under a distributed processing environment and usability forboth real-time and off-line studies environments. Results are presented for a 9 bus test system and foran actual large scale configuration of the BIPS.
