As part of Eskom’s expansion plan and hard to come by servitudes in South Africa, alternatives are being considered to supply the increasing demand for electricity. The options addressed consider existing aged infrastructure being replaced by new infrastructure, with an increased capacity using existing servitudes in built-up urban areas.Concerns from the general public arose from the upgrade of the 88 kV Crowthorne – Lulamisa distribution line to the new 132 kV 258 double circuit distribution line and what would the health implications be with the upgrade.To support this upgrade, an extensive measurement and prediction programme was undertaken to clarify some of the electric and magnetic field (EMF) health issues. Further to this, human exposure to EMF was also considered through 3D human anatomical body dosimetry.This paper addresses the EMF issues within South Africa, which supports the scope of the project of the rebuilt line, with the aid of 3D anatomical body dosimetry. Only the magnetic field exposure has been reported on in this paper.
