In recent years, the outages of large wind power have occurred frequently, which has posed greatchallenges to the safe operation of the power grid. One of main reasons of these large wind poweroutages is that the system voltage exceeds the maximum operating voltage of wind turbines. Thus,studies on the root causes and prevention measures of large wind power outages due to high voltageconditions are urgently needed. In this paper, existing large wind power outages in China arereviewed, and key reasons for the voltage rise are analyzed. A comprehensive prevention strategy,which includes coordinative reactive power control between wind turbines and reactive powercompensation devices together with the requirements of High Voltage Ride Through (HVRT)capabilities of wind turbines, is proposed. Its effectiveness in eliminating large wind power outage dueto high voltage conditions is verified through simulation.
