Current knowledge on the peculiarities of grain boundaries in severely deformed metals and alloys are summarized and the implications of these modifications for the stability of the microstructure including these "deformation-modified" grain boundaries but also concerning the resulting mechanical properties of the materials are discussed. Additionally, an example is shown concerning the exploitation of non-equilibrium processing pathways involving extreme defect densities to design new microstructural states with advanced property combinations.
