Reaction control engines set up laterally in avehicle and operate in a pulse mode. When theengine is working, it includes the startupprocess and the shutoff process in which the jetinteraction flowfield is unsteady. Compared tomost of the existing work focusing on theflowfield characteristics of steady jet interaction,the characteristics of unsteady jet interactioninduced by a pulse jet of an engine are rarelyinvestigated, especially for hypersonic flowconditions. In present work an experimentalmethod was developed to research thecharacteristics of unsteady flowfields inducedby a pulse jet. The process of unsteady jetinteraction flowfields during startup and shutoffinterval was clearly visualized by a high-speedschlieren technique and the fluctuatingpressures were obtained. The comparison ofunsteady numerical and experimental resultsagreed well each other. The research isvaluable and important to further investigatethe effects of unsteady jet interaction.
