Proposal for an Environmental Information Repository for the State of São Paulo (Brazil) and its Importance for Protecting Soil Quality and Managing Polluted Areas

The State of São Paulo (Brazil) has an extensive database of contaminated sites, manyof which are in the process of monitoring or recovery. Although this database be available forpublic consultation, the information is not presented in a way that facilitates its verification andunderstanding by citizens. For example, it is not easy to check the number of contaminated areasin a specific region. Thus, a person who wishes to know if there are hotspots in a region shouldconsult an extensive list in a PDF file. This is a typical example of environmental informationwhich presents difficulties of access and manipulation, although it is available for publicconsultation. This study was conducted to show that with the use of simple systems, the access toinformation on contaminated areas can be facilitated, with positive implications for the recoveryof degraded areas.
