Emerging Issues for High Strength Leachate Treatment

Interference with ultraviolet (UV) disinfection that leachates can cause at receiving wastewatertreatment plants is one of emerging challenges in treating high strength leachate, as more of theplants switch to UV from chlorination. This paper evaluates the following alternatives forimproving UV transmittance of biologically treated leachate: ozone, ozone with hydrogenperoxide, Fenton’s reagent, and nanofiltration. It also includes a brief discussion of othertechnologies that were considered: reverse osmosis, sulfate radical oxidation, activated carbonadsorption, and electrocoagulation.
