Urban Solid Waste Management in Ilorin, North Central Nigeria: A Case Study

This study examines urban solid waste management activities in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria.Activities examined include solid waste generation, composition, storage, collection, materialrecovery and disposal techniques. The result of the study indicates that an average of 0.22kg ofsolid waste is generated per capita per day while commercial activities resulted in 0.0382 kg/m~2 -0.1558 kg/m~2 per day. These wastes typically consist of organic materials, paper, plastics, glassand metals. A total of 108 municipal waste bins are present within the metropolis for the storageof wastes and medium sized vehicles transport the waste bins to the disposal facility. Materialrecovery and reuse activity is done at households, service points, and disposal site while severaljunk shops sell reusable items. An integrated approach is proposed which will rely less ongovernment subvention, and incorporate social, environmental, economic, and institutionalcomponents into the waste management technology.
