QUANTIFYING SURFACE METHANE EMISSIONS FROM TWO LANDFILLS OF THE STATE OF MEXICO

In agreement with the Kyoto Protocol requirements, Mexico reported in 2010 theemissions of 748,252.2 GgCO_2e that represents a 33.4% increase related to 1990. Thecontribution of the waste sector to these emissions was of 5.9%. The reported of municipal solidwaste (MSW) disposal considers only the generated emitted on from the venting wells inlandfills, however, it is suspected that there are substantial and unquantifiable surfaces emissions.In this work, the surface emissions of CH_4 in a sanitized cell of Villa Guerrero (CSVG) and in aclosed cell type RESA of Zinacantepec (C1ZIN) were determined using a static camera and aportable gas analyzer GEM-2000 LANDTEC. The measurements in the CSVG were 0.3-38.3 %CH_4 v/v in venting wells and 0.2-7.4 % CH_4 v/v on the surface, while in the C1ZIN were 0.5-58.7% CH_4 v/v in wells and 0.3-1.4 % CH_4 v/v on the surface. The surface minor concentrationsmeasured in the C1ZIN corroborate the importance of operating under regulations, however theresults highlight that there are significant surface emissions in both types of cells.
