EFFECTIVELY MANAGING AND SHARING STATEWIDE DATA TECHNICAL PAPER SUBMITTED TO 21st ITS WORLD CONGRESS, DETROIT MICHIGAN, 2014 TOPIC AREA: 8. TRANSFORMATIVE TRENDS
Traffic Management Centers (TMCs) and state transportation agencies are rapidly becoming hubs for collecting, managing, and distributing real-time data and video feeds. Internally, realtime data and video are core components of Transportation System Management and Operations (TSM&O). Externally, partner agencies, stakeholders, the private sector, and the traveling public seek to obtain real-time data and video to support the growing need for situational awareness and traveler information. In May 2012, Open Roads deployed a fully comprehensive and consolidated statewide approach to disseminating data for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The Transportation Video and Data (TV&D) project in Virginia was the first of its kind to bring statewide incident, whether, event, travel time, gate status, and sensor data, and video, into a central distribution hub for normalization, branding, and dissemination to the public sector, the private sector, and partner agencies.
