The paper provides information on the implementation and the initial deployment of the automatic incident detection (AID) system for road tunnels MAVE~®-tun in the river tunnel "Elbtunnel" in Hamburg, Germany. The system considerably contributes to the improvement of road safety in the tunnel. Furthermore, an efficient and quick incident detection and management at the Elbtunnel has significant positive effects on the traffic situation in large urban network parts, as the tunnel is a vulnerable part of the urban motorway network. The operators of that tunnel selected the MAVE~®-tun technology because of the proven advantages in Felbertauern Tunnel, Austria, in comparison with other AID technologies, e.g. based on video image processing. The current evaluation process in Elbtunnel revealed that the detection technology of installed MAVE`®-tun system is neither negatively influenced by adverse environmental conditions nor by any traffic condition nor driving behaviour. The system quality is always equally good, and the system reacts on incidents typically within seconds. The positive experience at the Elbtunnel in Hamburg could be a good basis for the further deployment of the aforementioned technology for automatic incident detection with resultant alert for use in all types of road tunnels.
