While airline passenger traffic is never completely predictable, it does continue to increase at a slow but continuous pace. This steady growth is reflected in the increase of vehicle traffic on airport roadways, including those to deliver and pick-up passengers. Airports are responsible for providing the roadways, curbsides and parking spaces, as well as the systems for managing the traffic flow of both private and public vehicles. Though not a new responsibility, managing this ever-increasing on-site vehicle traffic has become an expected service, measured by the customer. Airport, Ground transportation management systems, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), License Plate Recognition (LPR), Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Taxi, Commercial vehicle As more public vehicles enter the airport space, governmental agencies are increasingly requiring use of more fuel efficient public vehicles, and are providing more incentives for multi-occupant public transit options and multi-mode strategies to reduce the traffic congestion. Airports are also facing increased security regulations on vehicle movements in and around the passenger terminals that restrict the use of some locations. All of the stress being placed upon the airport roadway and parking system comes at a time when the available funding from all sources is decreasing and becoming more uncertain.
