Real-time traffic information ("RTTI") is one of the most common IT (Information & Technology) services offered to ensure comfort and safety of many drivers. In the Republic of Korea, RTTI has been offered by concerned authorities and local governments through social networking services ("SNS") which started to gain popularity among Koreans around early 2010. Despite its merits, a downside to the current RTTI service is such that it is being offered specific to each jurisdiction, hence lacking pan-jurisdiction access for users who demand multi-jurisdiction traffic information. Moreover, RTTI distributed through SNS is in most cases based on text-type message and not on symbology, thus making it difficult for users understand the information on intuitive levels. To complement the weaknesses of SNS-based RTTI, an online operating system has been developed by mobilizing six concerned authorities' 28 SNS sites that offer RTTI. Specifically, said operating system collects RTTI, categorizes its text-based messages into location information and specific situational information (e.g., Communication, Accident, Road Work, and Other categories), and conveys that information in map-based form. Development of the operating system is accompanied by the creation of a mobile app into which the system has been incorporated.
