SAMPLING, CHARACTERIZATION AND DISPOSAL OF SPENT ION EXCHANGE RESINS

Spent ion exchange resins have been stored at Douglas Point (DP) and Gentilly-1 (G-1) sites. Resin samples were collected from the underground tanks and vaults at these sites and radiochemical analysis was performed. Consequence of failure (CoF) analysis performed for the sites, based on the radiochemical data, concluded that in the event of complete failure of the tank, the radionuclide releases would be well below the derived release limits (DRL) for the facility. Remote visual inspections indicated that the storage systems are in reasonably good condition with no significant concerns. An option assessment is underway for retrieval, conditioning and storages of the conditioned wastes.
