Estimation of Target Detection Rate in Aircraft Surveillance System

This paper is concerned with an estimation of the target detection rate for aircraft surveillance system. Recently, the passive surveillance system has been expected to be used as a new aircraft surveillance system. In the passive surveillance system, since reflected/scattered powers from aircraft are generally much smaller than incident power from a source, it is difficult to detect only the desired signals. In order to increase the detection rate, we need to develop an enhanced receiver unit or to appropriately locate receivers. In this paper, we describe an estimation method of detection rate for moving target. First, we introduce a simple algorithm for analyzing scattered powers from an aircraft which is regarded as radar cross section. The algorithm is based on the ray tracing method (RTM), and it enables the rapid computation in super wide areas. Next, we show the detection rate of aircraft as one example. They can be computed by choosing the output power of transmitter or antenna gain as parameters. Finally, we discuss the advantages of the proposed method and its future application.
