Compacted soils are often subjected to freezing-thawing cycles in cold regions. A set of unconsolidated undrained triaxial compression tests was performed on two types of clays to investigate the influence of moulding water content on the freezing-thawing behaviour. Soil samples were compacted at three different water contents; on dry and wet sides of optimum and at optimum water content under standard Proctor compaction energy level. The soil samples were exposed to 5 and 10 closed-system freezing-thawing cycles. The experimental results show that the increase in the number of freezing-thawing cycles usually results in the decrease of undrained shear strength. It is also obtained that all in the freezing-thawing cycles, the increase of moulding water content generally causes in the decrease of undrained shear strength.
