Slope failures on road cut slopes of the R1 expressway (Nitra - Tekovske Nemce) in the Slovak Republic

In spring months 2013 several tens of slope failures occurred within the slope cuttings of the Expressway R1 in section Nitra - Tekovske Nemce in Slovakia. The main reason of the slope failures occurrence was primarily the extreme climate conditions in the winter and spring 2012 - 2013, characteristic by repeated periods of excessive precipitations, snow melting, and freezing - thawing of soils in the slope cuttings. Also a concentrated runoff of water from rain falls in numerous channels have helped to slope failures occurrence, because the rain water runoff have not been properly drained and diverted outside the slope cuttings. In order to maintain safety and continuity of the traffic on the Expressway R1, it was necessary to perform some remediation works. In the presented article causes of two landslides and performed remediation measures are described.
