To overcome some of the problems associated with GPR antenna directivity, we have developed a dual polarization helicopter-borne GPR system. By simply summing up the signals of two orthogonal antenna pairs arranged in broadside configuration, directivity effects can be largely removed. Our system setup includes off-the-shelf components, such that it can be reproduced easily by other research groups. We demonstrate the benefits from our approach with a theoretical radiation pattern analysis and with data acquired on an alpine glacier.
