As the demand for mobile ad hoc wireless network (MANET) applications grows, so does its use for many important services where reliability and stability of communication are of great importance. In MANETs, exchanging messages during route discovery and the actual communication over these routes come at a cost of energy expenditure by the device. In this paper, we study this problem in the context of maintaining stable connections between mobile nodes. We propose a position-based routing protocol (GBR-DTR-CNR) that is both link stable and energy efficient for MANETs. Link stability will be supported by choosing links for routing based on a link expiration time estimation and a conservative neighborhood range, while energy efficiency will improved by using an adjustable dynamic transmission range that takes into account the mobility of the nodes. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of GBR-DTR-CNR compared to similar routing protocols.
