For the monitoring of oil spill events through SAR sensing it may be useful to evaluate the fractal characteristics of the sea surface, smoother where an oil film covers it. In our work the sea surface is approximated by the band-limited generalized Weierstrass-Mandelbrot two-dimensional functions. Fractal analysis is performed using the box-counting method, relying on a regression relation between the fractal dimension D{sub}(BC) of a surface S and the numbers of cubic boxes with (small) side size δ required to completely enclose S. After defining a normalised measure μ on the fractal surface S, we calculate also the Legendre spectrum f(a). Some results are reported and commented.
