Network connection codes implementation process

Network codes are a set of rules drafted by ENTSO-E, with guidance from the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators, to facilitate the harmonisation, integration and efficiency of the European electricity market. The contracting parties of the Energy Community will have to harmonize national network codes with the codes in European Union under the obligations coming from “Third Energy Package”. The network codes cover three key areas of the European electricity transmission sector: grid connections, grid operations and cross-border electricity markets. There are three Connection Network Codes which need to be implemented in the national Grid code: Requirements for generators, Demand connection code and a network code on requirements for grid connection of high voltage direct current systems. The Network Code on Requirements for Generators sets out the rules that new generators must adhere in order to connect to the transmission system. The code provides guidance on the way requirements will be implemented and sets ranges within which values must be chosen. The chosen values will be discussed during the national implementation process. By creating a clear pan European framework of capabilities which generators will provide TSOs have greater certainty that the future transmission grid can be operated safely.
