Low Cost Techniques for Improving the Surface Durability of Pervious Concrete

This paper presents the results of a laboratory study to improve the durability of perviousconcrete using readily available and low cost techniques. Surface raveling of pervious concrete isa concern for long term use and remediation techniques have not previously been investigated. Inthis study a high void content pervious concrete was cured in worst case hot and dry conditionsto produce poor surface durability. Pervious concrete mixtures included a traditional binder andone which included a super absorbent polymer for internal curing. Various remediation methodsincluding overlaying with fresh pervious concrete, latex paint, epoxy, and a surface densifierwere applied to the pavement before abrasion testing using the ASTM C944 rotary cuttermethod. Results showed that the internally-cured mixture had superior durability to thetraditional mixture. Of the surface applied techniques, epoxy provided the best improvement indurability followed by latex paint and the densifier. Material analysis showed that modifying amixture to include super absorbent polymer was the lowest cost option. On a poorly performingpervious pavement, latex paint or a thin overlay both had low material costs. The summaryconcludes that low-cost methods are effective techniques to improve the surface durability ofpervious concrete.
