The objective of this study is to clarify the behavior of a flat square membrane during wrinkling. It is considered that wrinkles are generated when buckling occurs. By calculating a series of successive equilibrium states before and after bifurcation buckling it is possible to establish a picture of the membrane behavior. By performing a path tracking analysis of the membrane incorporated into a finite element analysis from the software package ABAQUS it was possible to calculate these equilibrium states and establish a bifurcation structure. The results explain wrinkle progression in the membrane with increasing loads as well as show new and unexpected membrane behavior patterns.
