Net Gain via Knowledge Organization: Classification and Productivity

The benefits of knowledge organization (KO) systems havebeen documented by many (e.g., Hodge, 2000 Hjørland,2008 Abbas, 2010). Despite known advantages, KOinvestment appears to vary widely among and withinindustry, research, and educational communities. Dataspecific to KO investment and the impacts (gains andlosses) is limited. The societal benefits of improving KOsystems may thus be under-appreciated, both within andbeyond the field.This panel addresses a need for discussion on KOinvestment and impacts. The panel brings together expertsand researchers who are either on-the-front-line addressingKO in operational systems, or researching aspects of KOdevelopment and investment. Topics covered includetaxonomies and constant state of change impacts of riskand KO the notion of KO capital and classification andproductivity. The panel moderator will facilitate adiscussion on evaluation approaches for gaining insight intothe economic impacts of KO.
