Closing the loop: assisting archival appraisal and information retrieval in one sweep

In this article, we examine the similarities between theconcept of appraisal, a process that takes place within thearchives, and the concept of relevance judgement, a processfundamental to information retrieval systems. Morespecifically, we revisit appraisal/selection criteria proposedas a result of archival and digital curation communities,and, compare them to relevance criteria as discussed withininformation retrieval's literature based discovery. Weillustrate how closely these criteria relate to each other anddiscuss how understanding the relationships between thethese disciplines could form a basis for proposingautomated appraisal and selection for archival processesand enabling complex queries within information retrieval.
