Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of air and oxy-coal combustion in a 0.5 MW combustion test facility were performed. The test conditions were representative of experiments that were carried out employing a Russian coal and South African coal as fuels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performances of gray and non-gray models for the radiative properties of the gas-phase. In all of the investigated scenarios the gaseous temperature predictions were not affected by the choice of the radiative property model. However, the furnace wall temperatures and the incident radiative flux predictions from the gray and non-gray models were significantly different.
